It is not only the stunning natural beauty of the Guanfu area that led to this location being chosen for a new sculpture. In September 2025, a historic downpour caused Matai’an Barrier Lake to burst its banks, sending millions of tonnes of water and debris through Guanfu Township and causing devastating loss and destruction. The impact of this disaster remains ever-present and was a significant reason the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation selected this site for a new sculpture.
Emergence seeks to reflect the spirit of recovery and regeneration that has followed. Alongside skilled craftsmen and local Indigenous people who played a significant role in responding to the disaster contributed invaluable knowledge and assistance during the creation of the sculpture.
The work forms part of the East Rift Valley Land Art Festival and is constructed from locally sourced bamboo, harvested while still green. Beautiful, resilient and flexible, bamboo carries within it a sense of vitality and growth. Bundles of bamboo are woven onto a lightweight steel framework, creating a dialogue between organic material and underlying structure.
The five-sided form references the Eastern philosophy of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Rising from the pond like the lotus flowers that surround it, the sculpture is rooted below the surface yet reaches upward towards the light and sky. Its open, woven structure allows the landscape to remain visible through the work itself. Forested mountains, water, clouds and shifting light become part of the sculpture, moving through and around it.
Partially submerged, Emergence appears to grow from the pond, standing approximately 4 metres above the waterline and suspended between
reflection and ascent.

The same lotus of our clime blooms here in the alien water with the same sweetness, under another name.
